The University of Newcastle

The University of Newcastle began as a college of the University of New South Wales. It opened in late 1951 and accepted its first students in 1952. The University of Newcastle was granted autonomy by the NSW parliament in 1964. It became an independent university in 1965 and is now ranked in the top 200 universities in the world. Since its foundation, the staff, students, and leaders of the University have introduced unique ways of thinking and operating that have led to remarkable outcomes. The university operates multiple safe, friendly, and secure campuses, including Callaghan campus, Newcastle City campus, Central Coast campus, Singapore campus, and Sydney Campus

The Callaghan campus is a wonderful mix of award-winning, architecturally designed buildings, and world-class infrastructure across 140 hectares of natural bushland. The campus is the central hub for education, humanities, social science, and the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM), as well as nursing and health.

In the heart of the city, the Newcastle City campus provides an integral link with industry across creative industries, business, and law. The campus is a hive of innovation in the city center. The university’s state-of-the-art facility NUspace delivers a ‘next generation’ university experience.

Halfway between Newcastle and Sydney sits the Central Coast campus at Ourimbah. This campus offers study programs in business, education, humanities, and social science, oral health therapy, podiatry and nursing, and the sciences (food, coastal and marine, and exercise and sports).

The Australian Government allows international students that meet study and skills criteria to stay in Australia after they complete their studies and gain valuable work experience. To promote living and working in regional areas, students are eligible to stay for up to two years if they complete their studies at the Sydney campus, for up to three years from the Newcastle campuses, or for up to four years from the Central Coast campus.
