Established in 1857, Illinois State University is an open university that was earlier known as Illinois State Normal University. Later on, it was renamed to its current name in 1968. It is considered to be among the oldest institutions in Illinois. Also, it is known to be in the list of the top ten largest producers of teachers as per the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. The university was initially developed as a training school for teachers.
The university campus features several residential halls for students. It provides all the facilities required by students at the campus. The library at the campus consists of thousands of journals, magazines, books, and research papers. Students can also access online books available at the library. They experience a peaceful learning environment at the campus. All the competitions, fests, debates, seminars, and events organised by the university take place within the premises. There are a total of seven residence halls at the campus, namely Watterson Tower hall, Hewett hall, Wright hall, Walker hall, Colby hall, Whitten hall, and Dunn hall. Many cafes are close to the university campus. Also, a few medical shops, departmental stores, and stationery shops are nearby the campus.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral level programs. There are a total of 20,784 students. The academic structure of the university consists of various subjects that are categorised into five colleges, namely the College of Applied Science & Technology, College of Business, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, and College of Education. Students are taught by skilled faculty members. A number of industry professionals visit the university for practical workshops, interactive sessions, and guest lectures. Students also get a chance for internships at notable companies. The internships can be paid or unpaid. The university is known to have over 350 student organisations within the campus.
