Mississippi State University

Officially called the Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science, Mississippi State University is an open research university. Formed by Congress through the Morrill Act (1862), the land-grant institution was officially certified as Mississippi Agricultural & Mechanical College in 1878 and received its first student batch in 1880.

The university occupies a land of about 4,200 acres and houses over 730 buildings. The area of the university includes pastures, farms, and woodlands. Other than this, the university operates 8 colleges. It offers more than 175 graduates, baccalaureates, and specialized degree programs. The university is the only university in Mississippi to offer certified programs in veterinary medicine and architecture.

Having a nationally and globally diverse student body of more than 22,000 students at its core campus, it is the largest campus around the state by enrolment. Apart from these schools and colleges, the university maintains an out-of-campus center in Meridian that offers graduate and undergraduate degree programs. Other than this, in Vicksburg, in association with the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, its College Of Engineering provides master’s programs in science to students. Also, there are numerous farms beyond the core campus that are used for agricultural research work. Known as Mississippi State Bulldogs, the university’s intercollegiate athletics teams participate in NCAA Division I athletics. In 1932, the university was the founding member of the SEC. The university team has won several competitions including national championships.

Apart from this, the institution has more than 300 student clubs and organizations. The well-known groups include the prominent Maroon Band, MSU Road Runners, Alumni Delegates, Maroon VIP, Music Maker Productions, Lambda Sigma, the Engineering Student Council, Orientation Leaders, Arnold Air Society, the Black Student Alliance, the Stennis-Montgomery Association, the Baptist Student Union, and many more.

Other than this, the university is proud of its rich alumni base having students who are now contributing to almost every field of society. Stand-up comedian Jerry Clower, an author of admired legal thrillers John Grisham, U.S. Senator from Tennessee Marsha Blackburn, and ex-vice president of The New York Times Turner Catledge, are some of the prominent alumni of the institution.
