The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a world class public university located in Duluth. Originally established as a teaching school for women under the name Duluth Normal School, it became part of the University of Minnesota in 1947. The university offers a variety of undergraduate, post baccalaureate and graduate programmes. The University of Minnesota Duluth is well known for its research programmes in ocean, sea and freshwater sciences. UMD has a sprawling campus spread over an area of 244 acres overlooking Lake Superior.
The campus holds great historical significance. There are more than 50 buildings on the campus. Four of these are listed on the National Register of Historic places. The campus is well connected by concourse and hallways. The university also houses the Tweed Museum of Art, Weber Music Hall, Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium and the Marshall’s performing arts center. Duluth is the fourth largest city in Minnesota and gives university students the dual benefit of city life and rustic outdoors.
The university offers over 150 undergraduate majors and minors, graduate programmes in over 25 fields, a two-year programme at the School of Medicine and a four-year College of Pharmacy programme. There are nine colleges and schools at the university. These include the College of Education and Human Service Professions, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Pharmacy, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, School of Fine Arts, Swenson College of Science and Engineering, Graduate School and Medical School. Notably, the Medical School is directly linked to the University of Minnesota Medical School from the Twin Cities campus.
The University of Minnesota Duluth has fees reciprocity agreements with Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota and gives away $125 million in financial aid every year. The university is a regular recipient of monetary gifts by alumni, foundations, and corporations to further enhance its performance and progress. In the year 2019, the university received over $14.3 million through donations. For the year 2017-18, the grants received for research exceeded $15.6 million.
University of Minnesota Duluth is notable for its long list of successful alumni. Leading the list is Brian Kobilka who received the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Another big name is Robert Senkler who served as Chairman and CEO of Securian Financial Group. UMD has given Duluth two of its mayors, Emily Larson and Don Ness. Other well known names are Amit Singhal (computer scientist), Drew Seisler (Analyst), John Harrington and Mark Pavelich (hockey players).
