University of Illinois Springfield

The history of the origin of the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) can be traced back to 1960 when some central Illinois citizens came together to form the Springfield Committee for Higher Education with the aim of building a university in the capital city. In 1969, legislation to create Sangamon State University (SSU) was passed. SSU started operating in 1970. The University of Illinois merged with SSU in 1995 to form UIS. Currently, the university comprises four colleges and is recognized by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Also, many of its programs are accredited by various professional accrediting agencies.

Situated in the southeast part of Springfield, Illinois, the UIS campus is spread across 746 acres. It consists of three distinct areas: the University of Illinois era, Legacy Campus and SSU Permanent Construction. SSU Permanent Construction is home to Brookens Library and Public Affairs Centre, which features Sangamon Auditorium, a performing Arts Centre and a huge concert hall. The campus provides students with a number of comfortable housing options including residence halls, shared bedroom housing and apartments and townhouses. It also offers a plethora of recreational facilities such as a cricket field, challenge course, tennis court, gymnasium, Disc Golf Course, Kiwanis Stadium Basketball Court, and a recreation center.

UIS offers 31 bachelors, 1 doctoral and 20 masters programs in various fields like business, management, education, human services, accountancy, computer science, liberal arts, sciences, psychology, administration, and public affairs. It also offers 1,681 online majors. The university has around 4,700 students including more than 900 online students and over 300 foreign students. It is home to 220 full-time and 129 part-time faculty members. It has an impressive student-to-professor ratio of 15:1. UIS houses more than 85 student organizations and clubs. With its strong international connections, it offers exchange opportunities across 55 countries including Australia, Canada, Botswana, China, Germany, The Gambia, Greece, Japan, Jamaica, Mexico, Poland, Nicaragua, the United Kingdom, and Romania.

UIS has over 35,000 living alumni scattered throughout the globe including many notable names.
