The University of Buckingham

The University of Buckingham is a private university which was established in 1973 and is amongst the oldest private universities in the country. It was given the status of a university in 1983 by Royal Charter. Also, the university is a member of the Independent Universities Group. When the university began to offer traditional degrees, it decided to expand its faculty and increase faculty members as the number of enrolments were increasing rapidly. In 2015, the university opened the School of Medicine and began offering an undergraduate degree programme in the same year. The medical school is known as the University of Buckingham Medicine School and it is associated with the Milton Keynes University Hospital and Milton Keynes NHS Trust.

The campus of the university comprises of some central buildings, namely Yeomanry House, Anthony De Rothchild Building, Humanities library, fitness centre, Student’s Union Office, the Georgian house for accommodation, and the Department of Politics and Economics. Moreover, the largest lecture theatre, Ian Fairburn is also located within the campus. Another building nearby the theatre has a research wing and the teacher training faculty. This building is known as the Department of Education. It is nearby restaurants, cafes, departmental stores and many chemist shops for student’s convenience. The campus has a peaceful learning environment. The residential buildings are well-maintained and include dining areas as well as Internet accessibility.

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Its undergraduate programmes consist of about 1,315 students and around 1,205 students are under postgraduate programmes. As a report generated after a survey in 2017, the total strength of the university is 2,520 students. The academic structure of the university comprises of five schools, namely the School of Business, School of Law, School of Humanities, School of Art & Language, and the School of Science & Medicine. In addition, two renowned research centres are located within the premises, the Centre for Education and Employment Research, and the Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies. Students get ample opportunities to work along with professionals so as to gain practical knowledge about their area of study.

The university has a list of notable alumni that includes Bader Ben Hirsi (Director and Playwriter), Brandon Lewis (Chairman of Conservative Party), Mark Lancaster (MP for Milton Keynes North), James Henderson (Former CEO of Bell Pottinger), Mohammad Ketapi (Government Minister in Malaysia), Marc Gene (Renowned racer), Suzanne Jambo (Lawyer and Human Rights Campaigner), June Arunga (Founder and CEO of Open Quest Media LLC), and Alexander Jovy (Renowned Filmmaker).
