San Francisco State University

San Francisco State University (SFSU) has been operating as a state university since 1972 but was originally established in 1899 as a state-run school. It is among the 23 universities in the California State University system. There are 6 academic colleges and 4 campuses located in Romberg Tiburon Center, Downtown Campus, Sierra Nevada Field Campus, and the main campus at Holloway Ave. The university offers 94 master’s degrees, 118 bachelor’s degrees, 26 teaching credentials, and 5 doctoral degrees. There are 12 athletic teams that compete at NCAA Division II level. SFSU has accreditation by Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The main campus of SFSU is 141 acres and is located about 2 miles away from the Pacific coast. There are 12 academic buildings, 8 residential buildings and communities, a gymnasium, Cox Stadium and Maloney Field. The vibrant campus attracts students from all over the world. There is also a Mashouf Wellness Centre that offers wellness activities and opportunities for recreation. San Francisco lies in the Northern region of California and is surrounded by San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. There are endless opportunities for recreation and get-togethers. It has become the financial center of the West Coast. There are 6 Fortune 500 companies in San Francisco. The culture, art and mentality of the city is like no other.

In 2016, San Francisco State University got 36,223 applications out of which it admitted 24,704. It is the 11th most diverse college in the country and has a College of Ethnic Studies as well. In 2017, the university received $83.7 million as a financial endowment. It has around 26,500 undergraduate students and about 2,800 postgraduate students. Academic staff of more than 1,620 professionals looks after these students. Bachelors can choose from 77 academic areas while students pursuing post-graduation have 63 academic areas to choose from. In addition, the university offers 41 certificate programs and 16 credential programs.

San Francisco State University has produced several notable alumni in the fields of science, arts, and politics. Actor and actresses including Annette Bening, the voice of Lois on Family Guy, Alex Borstein, Dana Carvey, and Danny Glover have all been associated with SFSU. The lead guitarist for Metallica, Kirk Hammett, was also a student at the university. The co-inventor of the microprocessor, Stanley Mazor and producer of Pixar Animation Studios, Jonas Rivera have also studied here. Former U.S. Congressman George Miller and Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif have graduated from SFSU. The 41st Mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown graduated from the university in 1955.
