Lincoln University has established in 1854 as the country’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University, or HBCU. Initially chartered as Ashmun Institute, it was re-named Lincoln University in 1866 to pay tribute to President Abraham Lincoln. Since the beginning, Lincoln has pulled in an interracial and global enrollment approach from the surrounding community, region, and around the world. Today, the liberal arts and science-based qualification programs serve a diverse student body, representing numerous societies, nations, and career interests.

The main campus is situated amidst the rolling farmlands and lush peaks of southern Chester County in Pennsylvania. During the initial 100 years, Lincoln graduated roughly 20 percent of the black physicians and more than 10 percent of the black attorneys in the nation. The graduated class has driven more than 35 universities and colleges and scores of prominent churches. They additionally comprise U.S. ambassadors, mission chiefs, federal, state, and municipal judges, mayors, and city managers. Today, Lincoln graduates are additionally making a name for themselves in creative and entertainment fields, including writers, directors, comedians, and film executives.

The Lincoln-Barnes Visual Arts program is a collaboration between Lincoln University and the Barnes Foundation. It offers a Visual Arts program that leads to a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and recently, a Pan-Africana Studies major has been added to the list of undergrad majors available at the organization. Lincoln University has 105 full-time faculty members and 81% of faculty with a terminal degree. The university maintains a favorable student-faculty ratio of 15:1. Also, 98% of undergraduate classes have 39 or fewer students.

The aim of the Office of Internship Services (OIS) is to engage students in planned, practical, educationally purposeful experiences in professional, work-related settings that relate to or complement students’ academic and career goals. OIS will offer a range of internship experiences fitting for all students served by Lincoln University and for the types of academic, career, or professional programs offered. OIS will be guided by the norms and rules created in the beginning from this office, an advisory group, or a scholastic or academic or student success department.

Some grants and scholarships include: Government Pell Grant, Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree, Government Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a gift aid for students with financial needs, Pennsylvania State Grant (PHEAA) is made accessible to Pennsylvania inhabitants who are enlisted full-time or part-time and exhibit financial need.

Lincoln University has a list of remarkable alumni, including US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes, father of musical legend Cab Calloway, Medal of Honor beneficiary, and African-American editorial manager Christian Fleetwood.
