Georgia State University

Established in 1913, Georgia State University is amongst the four research universities of the University System of Georgia. Initially, the university was named as Georgia Tech Evening School of Commerce, then in 1947, the name was changed to the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia. Later in 1955, it was renamed as Georgia State College of Business Administration. In 1955, the university was granted university status. In 1969, the university’s name was changed to its current name. The university has developed rapidly over the years. It has been classified as an R1 research institute by Carnegie Foundation.

The university campus features accommodation facilities, including residence halls and centers. The campus provides all the facilities required by students. It also features university lofts that house approximately 550 residents on 14 floors. The lofts are open for students as well as their family members if they wish to live together. All the residence halls have dining spaces. Students experience a peaceful learning environment on campus. Also, the campus is close to many cafes and restaurants. Further, stationery shops, departmental stores, and chemist shops are located nearby the campus for students’ convenience.

The University offers more than 250-degree programs in 100 fields of study at the Atlanta Campus. It also offers over 30 associate degree pathways at five campuses and through the largest online program in the state. Presently, The university has 53,000 plus students from more than 170 nations and territories. Furthermore, The university has several research centers within the premises, namely the Language Research Centre, the Centre for Neuromics, the Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, Centre for Advancing Brain Imaging, and the Centre for Diagnostics & Therapeutics, Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine.

The student media features five organizations, namely The Signal, Neo Network, Album 88 Radio, New South, and Underground. The university has more than 400 student organizations, offers leadership programs and organization advisement throughout the year.

The university has a list of notable alumni that includes Yolo Akili (activist and writer), Amalia Amaki (artist), Coy Bowles (musician), Benita Carr (photographer), Douglas Edwards (renowned anchor), Predrag Gosta (director), Tamyra Gray (actress and musician), Mary Hood (author), Ken Lewis (CEO of Bank of America), Todd Starnes (author), Julia Roberts (renowned actress), Sean Linkenback (author), Lance Krall (actor), Simran Judge (American-Indian model and actor), and Amy Dumas (professional wrestler).
