Brandeis University

Brandeis University is a privately owned research university that was founded by the American Jewish community in 1948. It was started as a non-sectarian institute with the name Louis Dembitz Brandeis. The institution began functioning with 13 faculty members and 107 students. Today it is among the best institutions for research. The university is accredited to NAICU, AAU, UPNE, and AICUM. It is associated with the Boston Consortium and Association of American Universities. Boston Consortium enables the students of Brandeis University to cross-register for attending courses at different institutions including Tufts University, Boston University, and Boston College.

The main campus of the university is approximately 14 km from Boston. The 235-acre campus includes the Heller School, International Business School, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Rabb School of Continuing Studies, Rose Art Museum, and a library. The library possesses a unique collection of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, etc. that offer resources for research, learning, and teaching in the university. It has more than 2 million volumes (both electronic and physical), 45,000 journals (both electronic and physical), and 4,000 films. Also, Brandeis University is a member of the Boston Library Consortium that allows its students and teachers to borrow books from other institutions.

University’s Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies include research and evaluation of the Jewish community. It was established in 1980 and was first such an institution in the U.S. Apart from this, Brandeis University also has Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism, Steinhardt Social Research Institute, and Women’s Studies Research Center. These institutes support research in projects related to gender, justice, women, the Jewish community, and the ethnicity of the U.S.

Brandeis University offers a plethora of degree programs in various disciplines of arts, science, management, social sciences, and journalism. Currently, the university has more than 3,600 students enrolled for undergraduate programs, while more than 2,100 students are pursuing their post-graduation degrees. 20% of the undergraduate students in the university are from other countries of the world and has the eighth largest international student population in the country. The academic staff includes professors who are intellectual pioneers, award winners, and masters in their fields. There are 366 full-time and about 176 part-time faculty members in the university. With nearly 5800 students and 542 faculty members, the student-faculty ratio at the university is 10:1.

Brandeis University possesses a notable list of alumni who are leaders and innovators in their respective fields. Noble alumni and laureates of the university include politicians, scientists, academics, athletes, artists, authors, entrepreneurs, and media persons. Alisa Gravitz (Green America’s CEO), Marta Kauffman and David Crane (the co-creators of popular TV sitcom Friends), Olaf Olafsson (Time Warner’s Executive Vice President), Greg Zuckerman (Wall Street Journal’s special writer), Mitch Albom (Author), Anand Patwardhan (an Indian Documentary filmmaker), Nancy Richler (a Canadian novelist), Lindsay Gardner (Media Executive) and Arunoday Singh (an Indian Actor) are some of the alumni of this university.
