The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) University is a public university. It was established in the year 1875 as a school with 61 students and 2 teachers. In the era of the industrial revolution, the school transformed into an institution of agricultural and mechanical education. In August 1946, the university received a “Class A” rating by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and became a fully accredited member of the Association in December 1963.
The approximately 2002-acre AAMU campus is situated at Normal, Alabama, within the city limits of Huntsville, Alabama. The campus proper comprises 200 acres. AAMU has 30 major historic and ultra-modern buildings, eight female residence halls, and six male residence halls. The campus organizes a range of extracurricular activities and events with the help of more than 50 clubs and student groups. It is a land grant university.
The university offers more than 60 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs and concentrations. An honors program is also available for undergraduate students who are academically exceptional. The student-faculty ratio at the university is 20:1.
It hosts four colleges on its campus, namely College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences, College of Business and Public Affairs, College of Education, Humanities & Behavioral Sciences, Technology & Physical Sciences, and College of Engineering. The bachelor’s courses offered at the university are B.Sc in Accounting, B.Sc in Finance, B.Sc in Biology, B.Sc in Plant Biotechnology, B.Sc in Urban Planning, B.Sc in Electrical Engineering, B.Sc in Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts in English, B.Sc in Business Administration, B.Sc in Management, B.Sc in Marketing, B.Sc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, B.Sc in Entrepreneurship, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Bachelors in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and Bachelor of Arts in Communications Media. It also hosts online courses such as B.Sc in Management Online. A fall scholarship is available for students who meet the required academic qualifications. The university also organizes internships.
Alabama A&M University is part of the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC). It operates a research venture in association with NASA and other research universities in Alabama. It is also a part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. It provides educational outreach to the citizens of Alabama.
The university supports numerous varsity sports. It has a rich culture for sports producing many notable sportspersons like NFL Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champion Robert Mathis, Pro Football Hall of Famer, and 4-time Super Bowl Champion John Stallworth, Olympic Gold Medalist Jearl Miles Clark, Desmond Cambridge, and Mickell Gladness.
