In 1881, the University of Connecticut (UConn) was established as Storrs Agricultural School with the help of land and money donated by Augustus Storrs and Charles Storrs. The school started classes on 28th September with a batch of 13 students and three faculty members. It was renamed as Storrs Agricultural College in 1893, as Connecticut Agricultural College in 1899 and again as Connecticut State College in 1933. It finally became the University of Connecticut in 1939. At present, the university consists of 14 schools and colleges. Also, it holds the accreditation of the Association of American Universities.
Located in Storrs, the university’s main campus provides many academic and recreational facilities. The university has four regional campuses across Connecticut. Its Avery Point campus provides education in maritime and marine studies, UConn Stamford Campus is located near New York City and famous for Business-related degrees and Hartford Campus is located in Downtown Hartford and is famous for Humanities related degrees. Also, the university owns a campus in Waterbury.
Located near the State Capitol, its School of Law has its own campus. The UConn Health campus is located in Farmington and includes the UConn John Dempsey Hospital, an up-to-date outpatient facility, University Dentists, a research enterprise and the UConn School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. University earns about $258 million for research and it also spends $213 million in scholarships and grants.
The university offers 8 undergraduate degrees, 17 graduate degrees, 6 professional degree programs, and around 117 undergraduate majors in various fields like agriculture, sciences, environment, and architecture. The university has over 5,032 staff members and more than 32,000 students, 24% of whom are from abroad. It has collaborations with numerous national and international academic institutions and corporate firms. Using these links, the university provides the students with amazing opportunities like study abroad programs, student exchange programs, excellent internships, and well-paying jobs.
The university has an alumni network of around 264,000 students and its some of the notable alumni are like Bobby Moynihan who is a popular actor, impressionist, and comedian who also came on “Saturday Night Live, Jackie Burns is a Broadway actress who acted in “Wicked” as Elphaba, Chris Donovan is a famous TV director and producer, Kartik Chandran won the MacArthur “Genius Grant” award for transforming wastewater into valuable resources, Franklin Chang-Díaz is the CEO and founder of Ad Astra Rocket Co. T. Scott Case is the co-founder of Priceline.com, Rebecca Lobo is an Olympic gold medallist and ESPN analyst, Ray Allen is two-time NBA championship winner and ten-time NBA All-Star, Diana Taurasi is the winner of three WNBA championships. Many other successful personalities are a part of the university’s alumni network.
