Youngstown State University, also known as YSU, is a reputable public research university in Youngstown, Ohio. Established in 1908, it got to known as Youngstown College in 1931 and sought accreditation from the North Central Association in 1944. On 1st September 1967, after becoming a public establishment, Youngstown University turned out to be formally known as Youngstown State University. The following spring, YSU opened a Graduate School and College of Applied Science and Technology. In 1974, the College of Fine and Performing Arts was built. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
The 145-acre Youngstown State University campus is located in the scenic Mahoning Valley in the city of Youngstown, Ohio. It features reading and study rooms, computer labs, a copying center, various restaurants, and many student affairs offices. There are additionally many meeting and seminar rooms.
The university consists of the College of Graduate Studies and six undergraduate academic colleges: Beeghly College of Education, Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and Willamson College of Business Administration.
The University offers more than 115 undergraduate majors and over 30 graduate programs. Furthermore, YSU offers doctoral degrees in educational leadership and physical therapy. The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University was regarded as an ‘All-Steinway’ school. It is one of the most established non-conservatory schools of music in the United States. Moreover, the Youngstown State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in March 2005 and again in November 2015.
Youngstown State University offers student life programs. Outside of class, there are around 140 student organizations on campus that offer students a deeper sense of community and a higher level of involvement on campus. It maintains Youngstown State Penguins sports groups, which participate in the NCAA Division I Horizon League.
YSUF is an autonomous, non-profit association that distributes resources from privately held funds to help YSU students through grants. A finished Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a necessity for availing benefits under numerous scholarships. There are currently 357 scholarships granted through completion of this application
Some of the notable alumni are Edward Leonard O’Neill (born April 12, 1946), who is an American actor and comedian; and Ronald Vincent Jaworski (born March 23, 1951), who is a former American football quarterback.
