Approved by the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a privately-funded research university in Worcester city of Massachusetts. Established in the year 1865 by John Boynton and Ichabod Washburn, WPI is among the earliest engineering and technology universities in the U.S. It has academic affiliations from the Association of American Colleges and Universities, Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts, Association of Independent Technological Universities, New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.

WPI has a 95-acre residential campus located on the top of Boynton Hill, consisting of academic and administrative buildings, parking spaces, residences, recreational and student support facilities. The George C. Gordon Library, which is the central library of the university, holds a wide collection of printed and electronic resources, digital technologies and search tools. The library also features meeting and study areas. The campus features state-of-the-art sports and recreational facilities like Alumni Stadium and Norcross Track, Harrington Auditorium, Rooftop Field, Donahue Rowing Center, Sports, and Recreation Center, New England Baseball Complex and A.J. Knight Tennis Courts and Throwing Area.

The university provides an on-campus housing facility to about 2,400 students in its 16 residence halls with options like triple-sharing rooms, apartment-style arrangements, and suites. Other facilities featured on the campus include a bookstore, medical center, and several dining options. With sports affiliation from National Collegiate Athletic Association, WPI maintains 20 varsity teams who participate in various intercollegiate events and competitions under the name Engineers. Apart from this, the university operates over 50 project centers across all the continents.

WPI has 14 departments that offer over 50 educational programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The university extends career-oriented education in arts and humanities, science, business, engineering, technology, and social sciences. It also offers a range of certificate courses and online programs to enable flexible learning. Apart from this, the university has developed partnerships with several institutions and organizations to facilitate comprehensive research across different subject areas. At present, the university has about 38,000 students from 45 states of the U.S., including 14,500 undergraduate students with off-campus project experience. The academic staff of WPI includes more than 478 highly-qualified affiliates. The student-faculty ratio at WPI is 13:1.
