Founded in 1919, Western New England University is a private, non-profit university in Springfield, Massachusetts. It became a university in 2011. It is a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Association of Independent Colleges, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Universities of Massachusetts, and the College Entrance Examination Board. The New England Commission of Higher Education accredited it.
It awards degrees across liberal arts and professional disciplines. The university’s academic departments are arranged into five academic schools: College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering, and School of Law: Professional.
The Honours Programme at Western New England University is available to students welcomed by their individual Colleges. It is proposed to give academically qualified and motivated students the chance to join a community and take part in challenging courses taught by some of the University’s most experienced faculty. The Programme permits students to expand their education by taking courses in a variety of fields.
The Global Scholars program equips Western New England University students with the opportunity to upgrade themselves by understanding another region or nation outside of the United States through University coursework and international study experiences. While the College wherein the student is selected manages the structure of each Global Scholars program. Every single Global Scholar program incorporates the elements that are a basic experience, of course, study abroad, and courses in international issues, area studies, or foreign languages. The programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, and College of Engineering.
The University offers merit scholarships and grants, ranging from $10,000 to $22,000 annually or $40,000 to $88,000 over four years for students. These are granted to full-time first-year students at the time of acceptance into the University. The University additionally gives need-based scholarships together with grants and awards based on financial need and previous academic achievements.
Some notable alumni are John Joseph Bell, the Air Force officer and member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Nicholas Baldyga, a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Also, Thomas G. Bowman JD, the American political aide and retired Marine Corps Colonel who served as the United States Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Stephen Buoniconti JD’95, a former member of the Massachusetts Senate and former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives are noted alumni of the university. Lawrence F. Cafero JD’81 is a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and Republican House Leader was a popular alumnus of the Western New England University.
