Formerly known as the Agricultural College of West Virginia, West Virginia University is a public research-centric university. It was established in the year 1867 by the West Virginia Legislature. In the year 1873, under the presidency of Marmaduke Dent, the alumni association of this university was formed. In the year 1889, The Board of Regents approved to admit women in the university. The School of Medicine started its operations in the year 1902, offering a two-year medical course to the students. Presently, the university is functioning under the Presidency of E. Gordon Gee and holds an accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. It is certified as the R1: Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification.
WVU has a 912-acre main campus in Morgantown, which has three satellite campuses: the Downtown Campus, the Health Sciences Campus and the Evansdale Campus. The campus features state-of-the-art academic, administrative, recreation, housing and support facilities. This university has eight libraries that offer digital resources and modern computers to the students. The campuses also offer several amenities to the students to provide comfort and safety within the premises. These include police staff, the Core Arboretum and various student sororities. Additionally, WVU has built a transit system called Personal Rapid Transit to increase connectivity among these campuses, which commenced its services in 1973 and offers free rides to the staff and students. Apart from the main campus, the university operates two divisional campuses in Keyser and Beckley.
WVU has academic schools nine colleges and five schools that offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programmes in over 350 majors and minors. The students can choose to pursue programmes in arts and sciences, agriculture, natural resources, design, business, economics, creative arts, education, human services, physical activity, engineering, law, media, sport sciences, medicine, nursing and public health. It also extends a range of online programmes to ensure flexible learning for working professionals. West Virginia University is a vast community that represents ethnicities and cultures of 188 countries of the world and all 50 states of the U.S. In 2019, total students enrolment was 29,933 with 26,839 being on the Morgantown Campus. The university has 2,074 full-time and 693 part-time instructional faculties on the roll. In 2017-18, a total of $326 million was disbursed in the form of grants, loans and other financial aid to help the students.
WVU has a global alumni network of 2,00,000 graduates living in 135 countries, that includes many distinguished names known for their accomplishments and contributions in their professional fields. Some notable names in the alumni list are Don Knotts (Television Celebrity), Jon Mcbride (NASA Astronaut), Joe Manchin (Politician), Ken Kendrick (Owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks) and Katherine G. Johnson (Physicist, Winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom).
