West Texas A&M University, formerly known as West Texas State, is a well-established public university which is located in Canyon in Texas. It serves as a part of the Texas A&M University System. It was founded in the year 1910 and was originally referred to as West Texas State Normal College. It began as one of the seven state-funded teacher’s college in Texas. West Texas A&M University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Jack B. Kelley Student Center serves as the centre of campus activity at the university. It was in the later 2012 that this newly renovated centre made its debut. It features Legacy Hall which operates as a newly designed campus venue for activities and programmes. It can accommodate about 750 people and is equipped with all the facilities needed for better screening. The expansion of the centre also facilitates meeting rooms where student groups can gather for the activities. Further, JBK houses The Legends Club, a Chick-fil-A Express, Starbucks, Which Wich, a Sharky’s Burrito Company along with a convenience store. The Amarillo Center of the West Texas A&M University is situated on the 10th and 11th floors of the Chase building in Amarillo in Texas.
The university has a student body which consists of 56 per cent female and 40 per cent minorities. Around 82 per cent of the students in the institution’s student body constitutes the native Texans and about 285 students belong to other countries. With an acceptance rate of 67.4 per cent in 2014, the university was regarded as a selective university. It offers over 60 bachelor level programmes, 38 master level programmes and 2 doctoral programmes through its six colleges, schools and graduates school. Since the year 1910, the university has awarded 71,000 plus graduate, undergraduate and professional degrees.
Along with its excellent academic record, the university is equally famed for its notable alumni network. Evetts Haley, author Jennifer Archer, actor French Stewart, artist Georgia O’Keeffe, soccer player Davy Arnaud and many others
