Urbana University was established as a seminary in 1850 by Milo Williams, Col. John E. James, Rev. James Parke Stuart, and other Swedenborgian Church’s members. Bailey Hall, the first building of the campus, was completed in 1854. The institution was shut down during the Civil War and was reopened years later. Eventually, the university has made its place amongst the leading providers of high-quality education. Urbana University was acquired by Franklin University in 2014 and received its branch campus designation in 2017. It holds the accreditation of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Situated on Urbana’s southwest side in west-central Ohio, the Urbana University campus is spread across an area of 128 acres. It consists of numerous buildings, including the ones with historical importance featuring traditional architecture and contemporary structures. Bailey Hall, Barclay Hall, and Oak Hall are the campus’ three oldest buildings and are included in the National Register of Historic Places. The campus has witnessed several alterations in the early 21st century such as the creation of Sycamore Hall, the Urbana University Stadium, McConnell Hall and the Student Centre. It offers numerous academic facilities like modern classrooms, labs and a huge library. Also, the campus is home to 30 social, academic, professional and service organizations led by students.

Urbana University offers many undergraduate, graduate, endorsement and certificate, post-baccalaureate, doctoral and honors programs in various fields of study such as accounting, business, communication, health science, liberal studies, mathematics, psychology, sports, nursing, computer science, and social service. It houses over 40 full-time and 90 part-time faculty members and more than 1,800 students including those enrolled in adult and online programs. The university has a great faculty-to-student ratio of 1:15. It has a Career Services Office that works hard to assist students in integrating their career and academic interests and to introduce students to organizations looking to hire qualified and talented employees.
