Founded in 1994, the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is a public institution of higher learning and research in Queensland. Formerly established as the Sunshine Coast University College, the institution started operating in 1996 with 524 students. In 1999 the institution was chartered as a university, and hence it was given the present name. It has affiliation from the Regional Universities Network.
With the main campus situated at Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, the university has other campuses at 12 other locations in Fraser Coast and Brisbane. Spread across an area of 247 acres, the Sunshine Coast campus features exceptionally innovative learning and visualisation facilities for advanced learning. It features specialised laboratories for science, manufacturing, computer and design, simulated paramedic and nursing labs, nationally-authorised sport science labs and a series of interactive digital teaching and learning spaces. It also features an elite Art Gallery, fitness centre, swimming pool, 2000-seat stadium, bookshop, multi-faith prayer hall, community garden, several indoor and outdoor courts.
Other USC campuses are located in Hervey Bay, Southbank, Gympie, Caboolture, North Lakes and Noosa. Its new campus will be opened in Moreton Bay’s Petrie suburb in 2020. It has two international study hubs in Melbourne and Sydney, each offering several IT and business programmes exclusively to international students. The USC library possesses over 100,000 print volumes, 40,000 e-resources and 600 computer systems that are used for teaching, learning and research. USC owns seven clinics that are accessible to the public and render professional assistance to the community. Each campus has several cafes and eateries that provide healthy food. The USC provides an express shuttle service, which connects several campuses and public transport centres.
USC has eight schools that offer over 120 programmes in various disciplines like business, education, social science, tourism, humanities, law, communication, design, health, creative industries, science and technology. Learning at USC offers a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge to inculcate professional skills in students. Currently, USC has about 17,842 students enrolled for distinct under-graduate, post-graduate and doctoral programmes. The university is home to about 2,981 international students from 80 nations of the world, who make up 12% of the total student population. The academic staff of USC comprises of 420 affiliates who are profound learners and masters of their subjects. The administrative and helping staff has 655 members. The student-faculty ratio at USC is 23:1 and the female-male ratio is 1.67:1.
USC maintains a comprehensive list of its alumni, which includes the names of politicians, actors, businessmen, athletes, authors and artists. Jarrod Bleijie (Australian Politician), Brendan Burkett (Paralympic Swimmer), Soo Wincci (Entrepreneur, Actress and Miss World Malaysia 2008), Karen Foxlee, (Novelist), Rebecca Creedy (Australian Swimmer) and Marayke Jonkers (Paralympic Swimmer) are some of the distinguished alumni of the university
