The University of Notre Dame is a private research university that is spread over an area of 1,265 acres. This university is considered to be one of the top universities in the United States. Established in 1842, Notre Dame received its official college charter in 1844. The first degrees from the college were awarded in 1849.

Situated in Notre Dame, Indiana, this college underwent significant developments in the late 19th century. In 1917, this university awarded its first degree to a woman. Comprising of 190 buildings, the popular departments, colleges, and schools of this university include School of Architecture, College of Arts and Letters, Mendoza College of Business, College of Engineering, Keough School of Global Affairs, The Graduate School, The Law School and College of Science.

The University of Notre Dame also comprises of the main library which was built in 1963. It has a library network which comprises of architecture library, business library, center for digital scholarship, chemistry-physics library, an engineering library, Kellogg Kroc Library, Mathematics Library, Medieval Institute Library, Music Library, Reading Room, Rare Books and Special Collections, University Archives, and Visual Resources Center. The Hesburgh Library is known to be a hub of stored knowledge at Notre Dame.

This university also comprises of many research centers which include Boler-Parseghian Center for rare and neglected diseases, Klau Center for civil and human rights, Center for Informatics and Computational Science, Center for Theology, Science, and Human Flourishing, Interdisciplinary Center for Network Science and Applications, ND Energy and Real Estate Institute. The university has more than 12,000 students and over 1,300 faculty members. Some of the university’s latest research includes work on family conflict and child development, genome mapping, increasing trade deficit of the United States with China, fluid mechanics, computational science and engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and marketing trends on the Internet.

The University of Notre Dame also organizes a number of sports events throughout the year. It offers opportunities to learn and enjoy sports including baseball, basketball, cross-country, fencing, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and track & field; women’s sports include basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

This university has a list of notable alumni including Eric F. Wieschaus, who is a winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in medicine and Philip Majerus, who is a discoverer of the cardioprotective effects of aspirin. There are many people in media who had studied at the university such as talk show hosts Regis Philbin and Phil Donahue, television and radio personalities Mike Golic and Hannah Storm.
