The University of Northern Iowa is a public university. It was established because of two major reasons. Firstly, because Iowa wanted to take care of the orphans of the Civil War veterans, and secondly, the state was in need of an institution that would give training to teachers. The first building of the university had opened its doors in 1869 and was known as Central Hall.

The University of Northern Iowa is situated in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The campus has Faculty offices called Baker Hall and Bartlett Hall. It also has Bender Hall, Begeman Hall, Biology Research Complex, Communication Arts Centre, a clocktower called Campanile, and residence hall – Campbell Hall. The campus has the Centre for Energy and Environmental Education, Centre for Educational Technology, Centre for Urban Education, Dancer Hall, Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Centre, Gilchrist Hall, Hagemann Hall, Latham Hall, Lang Hall, Rod Library, Sabin Hall, and Shull Hall. The campus has a Wellness Recreation Centre, Wright Hall, Seerley Hall, Rider Hall, and Panther Village that has apartment-style residence buildings for seniors and juniors.

The University of Iowa offers a degree program in Nursing with majors in Health Sciences, Pre-professional, and Biology. It offers a graduate program in accounting. The School of Applied Human Sciences offers a major and minor in Family Services, a major and minor in Gerontology, a major in Interior Design, a major and minor in Textiles and Apparel, and a graduate program in Counselling. The Department of Art offers a major, minor, and graduate program in Art and Graphic Design. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers a major and minor in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a major and graduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The Department of Communication Studies offers a major in Public Relations, a major in Event Planning, a major and minor in Interactive Digital Studies, a major in Sports Public Relations, a graduate program in Communication Studies, a major in Communication, a major and minor in Theatre Teaching, a major and minor in Digital Journalism, a major and minor in Digital Media Leadership, a major in Digital Media Production, and a major and a minor in Interactive Digital Studies. Other departments in the university are dedicated to subjects including Computer Science, Continuing Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Earth Science, Economics, Finance, Geography, Health, Recreation, and Community and Services, History, Literature, Management, Marketing, Maths, Military Science, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, and Technology.
