University of North Texas

Established in 1890, the University of North Texas (UNT) is a public institution for research and higher education in Texas. Founded as a private non-sectarian college, UNT began operating in a hardware store with 70 students. It was granted the university status in 1961 as North Texas State University. In 1988, the university adopted its current name. A member of the University of North Texas System, UNT is affiliated to the Universities Research Association (URA), Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). It is a constituent of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) since 1992. It has sports affiliation from NCAA Division I to participate in the Conference USA.

Based in Denton city, the main university campus spreads across an area of 1,200 acres. The university will unveil its satellite campus in 2023 in Frisco, about 41 km from the main campus. The university boasts of avant-garde academic buildings, administrative offices, laboratories and research centres. Other on-campus facilities include a multicultural centre, medical and fitness centres, cafeterias and lounges. It features 14 residence halls that offer accommodation to more than 5,620 students.

The university library holds over 2,395,327 print volumes and 1,306,773 digital resources related to various subjects of study. UNT features world-class athletic facilities for sports such as football, basketball, soccer, golf, cross-country, softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and diving. It has 16 varsity teams that represent the university in various intercollegiate events and competitions under the name, Scrappy. The University of North Texas has a science and mathematics academy, two schools and eleven colleges. The institution offers about 105 undergraduates, 88 postgraduate and 38 doctoral degree programmes. It prepares students for various professional roles in arts, science, health, liberal arts, social sciences, research, journalism, politics, entertainment media, music, tourism, management, education, business, engineering, computer science and public service. The university has collaborations with several leading educational institutions, communities and business organizations across the world. These partnerships and collaborations facilitate student exchange programmes that offer global learning opportunities.

UNT is a large community of 38,154 students and over 4,600 faculty members of diverse ethnicities. Over 31,405 students have enrolled in various undergraduate programmes and nearly 6,676 for postgraduate programmes. The institution has approximately 2,520 international learners from 50 countries, who make up 6.6% of the total student population. The academic staff of UNT comprises teaching associates and full- and part-time affiliates. The student-faculty ratio at the university is 24:1.
