University of North Alabama (UNA) is a well-ranked coeducational institution for higher education and research in Florence. Established in 1830 as LaGrange College, it is the oldest four-year public-funded university in Alabama. The college transitioned into Florence Wesleyan University in the year 1855. However, it was burnt down in 1863, only to be re-established in 1972. Accredited to the Schools Commission on Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges, the university adopted its present-day name in the year 1974.
The university boasts of a beautiful 130-acre campus consisting of well-maintained buildings, shaded pathways, spacious lawns, sculptures, and fountains. UNA purchased the J.W. Powell School in 2006, which is regarded as the East Campus. Though the majority of offices and classrooms are on the main campus, a few academic units and culinary facilities are on the East Campus. The main campus is within walking distance of various stores, restaurants, and other amenities.
University’s library system comprises Collier Library, Music Library, Kilby School Library, and the Learning Resources Center. Collier Library holds over 350,000 volumes and also launched a digital repository in 2018 for housing the research and scholarly output by the university students and faculty. Student Recreation Center houses a fitness center, gymnasium, aerobics studio, and athletic fields. Other on-campus facilities include a medical center, an amphitheater, a community center, eight residence halls, three apartment-style residences, and several dining options.
UNA has five colleges offering a plethora of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in business, arts, sciences, education, and health. Currently, over 7,490 students from 37 countries are enrolled at the university, with 59% of them being females and 41% males. The academic staff includes 365 highly-qualified and knowledgeable affiliates. With the most classes having a minimum of 24 students, the university has a student-teacher ratio of 17:1.
The university provides numerous opportunities for the students to study abroad through exchange programs in countries like Africa, France, China, and Australia. Besides this, the Students’ Association runs various sororities, fraternities, and organizations ranging from academic to personal interest focused. They promote cultural unity, relationship development, and leadership opportunities through various events, competitions, and activities. It has 14 sports teams (6 men’s and 8 women’s) that represent the university under the name Lions.
UNA has an extensive network of over 60,000 alumni. The alumni list includes many notable names like Clay Bennett (Editorial Cartoonist), Priyanka Karki (Nepali Actress, Model and Choreographer), Pamela K. Long (Executive Producer and Writer), William Glenn Scott (American Actor), Thomas Sigismund Stribling (Lawyer and Pulitzer Prize-winning Author), Tom York (Television Personality), Darryl Wade Worley (Country Singer and Song Writer), Michael Nichols (Award-winning Photojournalist) and David Hood (Popular Bassist).
