University of Mary Hardin–Baylor

Commonly referred to as UMHB, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor was founded in 1845. It is a private Christian university. In 1845, the university was accredited as Baylor Female College by the Republic of the state. The university is officially certified by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It also has accreditations from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Situated in Belton, Texas, the university is home to more than 3,900 students coming from more than 30 countries. It offers academic facilities at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The university is recognized for offering programmes in science and music. Moreover, it has 94 per cent of its population as full-time freshmen. The university provides more than 90 per cent of the students some kind of financial aid to pursue higher education. In addition, it maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 18:1 to create a conducive learning environment.

The university offers more than 70 unique education programmes. It provides around 119 undergraduate majors and 13 graduate degree programmes. It includes various master’s degree and two doctoral programmes. The university offers these programmes through its eight colleges including College of Visual and Performing Arts, College of Christian Studies, College of Education, College of Humanities and Sciences, The McLane College of Business, Graduate School and Scott and White College of Nursing. Students are offered opportunities to go for study abroad programs in three countries. The university also has a Student Government Association that works for the welfare of the student body. Moreover, the athletic teams of the university are called Crusaders, or “The Cru” which participate in the Division III (NCAA) as a part of the American Southwest Conference (ASC). Apart from this, the university offers 12 varsity athletic programmes, six for men and six for women in sports, including baseball, soccer, football, basketball, golf, tennis, etc.

University of Mary Hardin–Baylor is known for producing outstanding nurses, educators, business tycoons, and missionaries. The alumni of this university are leading noteworthy careers in their respective fields. Some of the notable ones include Sybil Leonard Armes (author and ex-trustee of the university), Jerrell Freeman (football linebacker), Miriam ‘Ma’ Ferguson (the 1st female governor of the state and the 2nd woman to be chosen as the governor of any state in the country), Buddy Groom (Baseball pitcher – Major League) and Lucy Wilson Rice (Texas painter)
