Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool is a publically-owned institution for higher education and research. Initially established as University College of Liverpool, the institution became a constituent of the Victoria University in 1884. In 1903, the Act of Parliament and a royal charter granted it the university status giving the institutions its current name. The university has affiliations from the European University Association (EUA), North West Universities Association (NWUA), Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO) and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). It is also associated with the N8 Research Partnership and Russell Group.

The University of Liverpool has a 100-acre campus consisting of 192 buildings that house lecture theatres, teaching areas, and research facilities. The university also operates a satellite campus in London’s Finsbury Square and an international campus in China founded in partnership with the Xi’an Jiao Tong University. The university library holds an extensive collection of unique and rare printed volumes and digital resources for research, learning, and teaching. Sports and Fitness Centre on the campus features a 3G rugby training area, 25-meter swimming pool, fitness center, bouldering wall, sports therapy, and massage clinic, two synthetic hockey pitches, 13 grass pitches, squash courts, and sports halls.

Other facilities available on the campus include food outlets, medical centers, and social spaces. Students can access free Wi-Fi for various personal or educational purposes. The university provides both on-campus and off-campus accommodation to students in catered and self-catered rooms. It has seven residence halls on the campus and two residence halls at the off-campus location – Green Bank Student Village.

The University of Liverpool has three faculties that divide into various departments, schools, and institutes offering over 400 undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and online programs. The university offers academic programs in diverse disciplines of arts, law, medicine, science, architecture, engineering, media, communication studies, computer science, health, life sciences, languages, management, and environmental sciences. Apart from this, the university maintains several clubs that are managed by the Students’ Union. These clubs focus on various educational and recreational activities related to sports, media, drama, music, dance and public speaking. The university is an ethnically vibrant community with 50,000 students and 6,000 staff members from more than 160 nations in the world. At present, the university has about 22,000 on-campus learners including 7,700 international students, who make up 26.8% of the student body. Nearly 10,000 students from 160 countries are pursuing their degrees online.

The university has a vast alumni network of 219,000 graduates from about 171 countries. It maintains a separate list of its highly successful and award-winning alumni including the 10 Noble Prize laureates. Some notable names in the list are Joseph Rotblat (Nobel Prize-winning physicist), Sanjay Kumar Jha (Motorola’s former co-CEO), Jonathan George Snow (journalist and TV presenter), Dariush Borbor (Iranian-French architect), William Olaf Stapledon (science fiction author and philosopher), Ong Teng Cheong (Singapore’s former president) and Barham Ahmed Salih (Iraq’s current president)
