Founded in the year 1847, the University of Iowa is a publically-owned research university in Iowa. It is the earliest and the second-largest university in Iowa. It started operating in 1855 with students in the Old Mechanics Building, the current location of Seashore Hall. The institution is affiliated to the Universities Research Association, Big Ten Academic Alliance and the Association of American Universities. The institute has a sports affiliation from NCAA Division I. Spread over 1,880 acres, the university campus consists of state-of-the-art academic, recreational and housing facilities for students. The River Iowa flowing through the campus divides it into the western and eastern sections.

The University of Iowa maintains the most extensive library in the state. Its library system comprises of the Central Library, Law Library, Hardin Library for Health Sciences and 5 department libraries. It holds more than 5,000,000 bound volumes, over 200,000 rare books and approximately 1000 historical manuscripts. Besides, the library also possesses a collection of culinary arts, television and film scripts, comic books and science fiction. The campus offers excellent athletic facilities for various sports like football, hockey, wrestling, golf, basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, diving and volleyball. It has 11 residence halls providing on-campus accommodation to students. Other on-campus facilities include a wellness centre, field house, gymnasium, field house, recreation complex and several museums. The university has 11 colleges that offer courses in 200 different areas of study including medicine, dentistry, education, engineering, law, arts, sciences, aerospace, public health, business, computer science and management. It also offers distance learning programmes in social work, strategic communications and liberal arts.

The institution has about 500 student organizations and clubs, focused on games, sports, politics, lifestyle, dance, music, theatre and various other activities. There are 22 sports teams, known as Hawkeyes, which participate in different intercollegiate competitions. The student body of the university consists of students from all 50 states of the U.S. and 115 countries of the world. Currently, the university has about 32,948 students, which includes 23,989 undergraduates and 8,959 enrolled for post-graduation courses. There are about 2060 academic staff members who are great researchers, skilled businessmen, health care professionals and Pulitzer Prize winners. The student-faculty ratio at the university is 16:1.

The university maintains a global alumni network of over 250,000 graduates. James Van Allen, the world-famous physicist who invented the two radiation belts that circle the earth, is a notable alumnus of the University of Iowa. Other names in the list of distinguished alumni are B. J. Armstrong (Former Footballer), Mildred Wirt Benson (Nancy Drew Collection’s Author), Terry Branstad (American Politician), John W. Irving (Novelist), Al Jarreau (Jazz Performer), Ashton Kutcher (Actor), Max A. Collins (Author), Flannery O’Connor (Novelist), Gene Wilder (Actor), Juanita Kidd Stout (Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice) and Richard W. Maibaum (Producer and Screenwriter).
