Generally referred to as the Central or UCO, the University of Central Oklahoma is a non-profit institution of research and higher education in the Edmond city of Oklahoma, United States. Originally set up as a Territorial Normal School in 1890, it was the oldest such institution in Oklahoma and officially began classes in the year 1891. In 1904, the name of the institution was changed to Central State Normal School and then to Central State Teachers College in 1919 before it became the Central State College in 1939. In 1971, the state legislature granted it the authority to award postgraduate degrees in arts and business administration and, thus, granted it the university status under the name Central State University. UCO adopted its current name in the year 1991.
UCO maintains a beautiful campus spread across an area of 210 acres, consisting of 34 state-of-the-art buildings that facilitate a range of academic, administrative, recreational and other support facilities for the students. The facilities offered by the university include a wellness center, library, Y Chapel of Song and high-tech laboratories. The campus features three co-ed residence halls that offer accommodation in traditional-style rooms. The University Suites accommodate up to 302 students. Besides this, UCO has many apartment buildings that include four-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments as well as a community clubhouse.
UCO has six colleges that comprise various departments and offer 114 undergraduate majors and 58 postgraduate degrees in science, liberal arts, business, mathematics, education, fine arts, professional studies, and design. The Forensic Science Institute of the university provides a multidisciplinary program that includes educational, research and training opportunities for the students. Apart from this, it has the UCO Connected Campus that extends a range of online degrees to working professionals and those busy in personal lives.
The university has 250 active student organizations that work towards building relationships between communities as well as promoting various academic, personal and social interests. With the sports affiliation from National Collegiate Athletic Association, it participates in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association as Bronchos. At present, the university is home to about 17,000 students from 47 states of the U.S. and over 100 countries of the world. The student population includes a total of 1500 international students. It has 434 full-time and 400 part-time academic affiliates on the roll. With a classroom size of 20 to 25 learners, the student-to-faculty ratio at WU is 19:1.
