Established in 1903, the University of California, San Diego is an open research university associated with the AAU. The UC Regents approved the degree programs offered by the university in the field of Science and Technology in 1956. UCSD is part of the statewide University of California system, along with other 9 semi-autonomous public institutions. Also, the University of California, San Diego is one of the US Public Ivy colleges, whose aim is to provide quality education to students that can be found in Ivy League’s private colleges. UCSD includes 3 graduate colleges, 2 medical centers, and 6 undergraduate schools. The university has performed remarkable discoveries and inventions like the Keeling Curve, a graph that measures the increasing carbon dioxide level in the Earth’s atmosphere, theories of atoms and molecules in quantum chemistry, and the Miller Urey experiment that created the idea of prebiotic chemistry.
The main campus is located near the Pacific Ocean on approximately 1,200 acres of coastal woodland in La Jolla, California. The rich academic portfolio includes six undergraduate colleges, five academic divisions, and five graduate and professional schools. Moreover, San Diego is known to be a great city with amazing nightlife culture. It can be a good choice to live in the city. Also, the famous Geisel Library is also located on the campus. It comprises of thousands of books and research documents. The campus includes nine sports facilities including a 5,000-seat arena and a world-class athletic training center.
The university has a notable list of alumni that includes Robert Buckley (renowned actor), Billy Beane (Owner of Oakland Athletics), Kuan Chung-ming (Former Minister of NDC and Finance Professor at National Taiwan University), Nick Woodman (Founder of GoPro), Susumu Tonegawa (won Nobel Prize in Medicine), Silas Weir Mitchell (Actor), and Mike Judge (winner of Primetime Award). 15 Nobel Laureates are also associated with UCSD.
