Established in 2005, the University of California, Merced is an open research university. It is known to be the tenth campus of the University of California. Also, it is the only university in the United States to have LEED-certified buildings within the premises. The university began its first class in 2005. In 2015, the university collaborated with UC Davis and UCLA. The plan for the development of the university was created in 1988 by UC Regents. Along with the planning of academic structure, the UC Merced Centre was also established near the university. Later on, the number of enrolments increased and the university witnessed a rapid growth in its development.

In 2002, the university got certified by the Environmental Impact Report and received approval for community development at the university. The campus was designed and constructed by some renowned architects, namely Merril, Owings, and Skidmore. It is built across 230 acres of land. In 2000, the university expanded its campus from 230 acres to 810 acres of land. The library was the first building that was constructed at the campus. It holds up to 70,000 journals, 9, 65,000 books and a variety of novels. Moreover, the library features a digital classroom and offers access to electronic sources. In addition, around 21,000 students accommodate at the campus. The housing facilities are known to be well-maintained and are organised by the resident assistants. Also, the campus comprises of three famous research institutes, Sierra Nevada Research Institute, Advanced Solar Technologies Institute, and the Health Sciences Research Institute. The university offers an undergraduate degree program and a postgraduate degree program.

The total strength of the university is about 8,544 students. The undergraduate courses are categorised into three schools, the School of Natural Sciences, School of Engineering, and the School of Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities. Presently, the School of Medicine is under-construction. The various subjects give students a wide scope to choose according to their field of interest. In addition, the faculty members are well-experienced and provide ample practical knowledge to its students. They also take students for industrial visits so that they learn about the fieldwork and gain knowledge as well as exposure. Also, the students get chances to attend workshops organised by the faculty for a better understanding of the curriculum. They are given practical assignments so as to sharpen their skills.

The alumni of the University of California have been offered a salary package up to 36,900 dollars. They are known to be working in some of the notable organisations. The university has a well-known placement record. Some of the alumni also got placed as professors in renowned universities like Tessa Provins (Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh).
