Tulane University

Established in 1834 as a medical college, Tulane University is a privately-owned research university. It became an inclusive university in the year 1847. The institution of higher education got the status of a private university after the donations of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1884. It is one of the ten oldest private universities in the Association of American Universities, consisting of the top research universities in the United States and Canada.

Set in Louisiana, the university’s main campus is situated on St. Charles Avenue, and the campus is commonly known as the Uptown or St. Charles campus. It occupies an area of over 110 acres and is admired for its buildings’ architecture and massive oak trees.

Tulane University is governed by the Board of Tulane which was formed in 1882. The university has been served by 15 presidents since then. The university is divided into 10 schools that offer education in the field of liberal arts, sciences, and other specialized areas. The graduate programs are run by individual schools. Moreover, Newcomb-Tulane College serves as an administrative center for all the undergraduate procedures for students. Moreover, the university has nearly 30 libraries & research centers containing 2,200,000 books and 14,000 periodicals

For the fall of 2019, the university received a total of 41,365 applications which is over a 65 percent increase over the last five years. On its Uptown campus, the university has 14 residence halls to house all freshmen and sophomores and over 15 different eateries. Other than this, the Associated Student Body (ASB) is a student body that represents the university at various levels. Moreover, the university publishes a weekly newspaper, namely The Tulane Hullabaloo, run by its students. Except on holidays, the newspaper is published every Thursday for the academic session. 

Tulane’s alumni have contributed to different fields like arts, sciences, politics, and business. Its alumni include well-known entrepreneurs, people from entertainment, mass media, fashion, retail, and public policy. Some of the notable alumni include Ian Terry and Jerry Springer, John Kennedy Toole (literature), Shirley Ann Grau, Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winner, David Filo, Paul Michael Glaser (TV actor of “Starsky and Hutch”) and Lauren Hutton (supermodel and film actor).
