The University of Rhode Island (URI) is a public research university with its primary grounds in Kingston, Rhode Island. It is the land grant and sea-grant university for the state of Rhode Island. Its main campus is situated in the town of Kingston in southern Rhode Island. Furthermore, smaller campuses include the Feinstein Campus for Providence, the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center in Providence, the Narragansett Bay Campus in Narragansett, and the W. Alton Jones Campus in West Greenwich.
The university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in 80 undergraduate and 49 graduate areas of study through eight academic colleges. These colleges incorporate Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Professional Studies, Engineering, Health Sciences, Environment and Life Sciences, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Another college, University College for Academic Success serves principally as an advising college for every single incoming undergraduate and follows them through their initial two years of enlistment at URI.
The University of Rhode Island’s Center for Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) draws in undergraduate students and alumni class in a great individual and professional experience, from admission through employment. It utilizes the associations with local and national employer partners to explore inventive approaches to connect students, graduated class, personnel, and managers in the career education and development process. The Winter J Term is URI’s academic mini-semester that runs each winter break during the period of January. With a diverse list of on-campus programs, J Term gives students a concentrated period between the fall and spring semesters to focus, explore, and accelerate toward graduation. The University of Rhode Island awards numerous scholarships each academic year through the fundraising efforts of the URI Foundation and the generosity of private donors. For the 2020-2021 academic year, URI has implemented an online scholarship platform to help you in your scholarship search.
The university provides funds for need-based grants, such as the Rhode Island Grant, University Grant, and Founders Grant, to several thousand students. Awards are made to students with satisfactory academic records and demonstrated financial need. The student must file a FAFSA each year to be eligible for these grants. The amount of these grants may vary from year to year based on your FAFSA. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education award program gives awards to students who plan to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.
Some notable alumni are Christiane Maria Heideh Amanpour CBE who is a British-Iranian journalist and television host; Robert Duane Ballard who is a retired United States Navy officer; and Leon J. LaPorte who is a retired United States Army General and served as Commander, 1st Cavalry Division from 1995 through 1997.
