Established in the year 1789, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers education at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. This university is the first state-owned university of the country and the only institution to grant degrees in the 18th century. It was in the year 1876 that this university started awarding graduate degrees in various lucrative disciplines. The reputable pharmaceutical programme offered by this university began in the year 1879, followed by the inception of the School of Law. In 1915, the School of Education established, and in 1919, the school of commerce started. Additionally, in the year 1922, this university became a part of the Association of American Universities. In 1950, the School of Journalism and School of Nursing began its operations.

In addition to this, the university provides education in 104 master’s programmes and 65 doctoral degrees. In the class of 2023, the university received 44,784 applicants, which was 3% higher than the previous enrolment. This university is home to 49 Rhodes Scholars and more than 3,000 undergraduate students from this university have conducted their original research work.

The graduates of this university have pioneered professionally and are recruited with several leading organisations. It has over 335,000 alumni across the world, who are living in 161 different nations. Two Noble Laureates, namely Dr Aziz Sancar and Dr Oliver Smithies, are the graduates of this university. Apart from them, some of the notable alumni of this university are former CEO of HULU Howard R. Levine, sportsperson Bobby Jones, actor Andy Griffith and writer Ben Fountain.
