Established in 1870, Ohio State University is a public research university associated with APLU, BTAA, ORAU, and AAU. Earlier, the university was known as Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. It was developed with an aim to train students in the field of agriculture and mechanical courses. In 1878, it was given the status of a university. It is known to be the ninth-largest University in Columbus. The university began its first classes in 1873 along with 24 students.
It is one of the largest universities in the US with campuses in Newark, Mansfield, Lima, Wooster, Marion, and Columbus. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral level programs in their more than 200 academic centres and institutes. The academic structure of the university has various courses that are divided into 18 schools and colleges that give students a wide scope to choose according to their area of interest. Some of the well-known colleges are the College of Nursing, College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Public Health, College of Pharmacy, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Human Ecology, and the College of Optometry. Ohio State has been consistently ranked amongst the top higher educational institutes in the US.
It is popular for its cancer hospital and research centre and academic medical centre. The university also comprises of a four-acre park for cancer survivors with sculptures, a walkway and plaques, and more than 10 museums and galleries. In 2013-14, the university’s total research expenditure topped $982 million. Also, in 2013-14, the university’s research expenditure was $982 million. The University is counted amongst the top 12 open research universities in the United States.
The Columbus campus is spread over 1,667 acres of land. The campus is popular as the third-largest campus in Columbus. It features 21 libraries along with an 18th largest research library in Ohio and holds up to 5.8 million books, journals, and research papers. Also, the libraries are designed in the Italianate Revival style. These libraries are known to have world-famous novels and many other research collections. The College of Medicine and James Cancer Hospital is also located within the campus. The university is famous for its infrastructure and design-style. It has over 1,000 student organizations including student media organizations, intercollegiate recreational sports programs. The university is also a member of the Big Ten conference for various sports. In the 2016 Summer Olympics, athletes from the university have won a total of 104 Olympic medals 46 gold, 35 silver, and 23 bronze.
The university has a list of notable alumni that includes Roy Lichtenstein (Renowned artist), George Steinbrenner (Former owner of the New York Yankees), Larry Sanger (Founder of Wikipedia), James S. Albus (Known as the Hero of US Manufacturing), and Jack Niklaus (World famous golfer).
