Established in 1923, Texas Tech University (TTU) is an open research university in Lubbock City of Texas, United States. The institution is a part of the Texas Tech University System and is associated with the Universities Research Association. Initially known as the Texas Technological College, the institution then had six buildings and a total of 914 students. It offered only technical programmes in its initial years before adding subjects like business, science, medicine, law and social science to its list in 1960. It was in 1969 that TTU became a university under its current name. TTU has been classified as the highest research activity institution by Carnegie Foundation.
TTU boasts a beautiful main campus spread across an area of 1,839 acres in Lubbock. The main campus is home to the facilities of the law and medical schools. The site has about 71 research centres and institutes, including the two well-known research centres namely the Influenza Research Centre and the National Wind Research Institute. The northern section of the campus has the 27.5-acre National Ranching Heritage Center housing 38 historic structures that have been refurbished to their original state. The university has several libraries on the campus, each of which holds a wide collection of printed and electronic sources related to various subjects. These resources are accessible by both the students and the faculty for learning, teaching and research purposes.
Opened in 2015, the 278,000 sq. ft. Turf Complex is lined with two lacrosse fields, two full-size soccer fields and four flag football fields. The facility also has a picnic area and several restrooms. The university has 13 residence halls as well as five suites and apartment-style housing facilities on the campus. Other facilities on the campus include an open pool, a health centre, bike shop, counselling centre, climbing wall and several dining options. Apart from this, TTU offers several services to ensure safety to the students on the campus. TTU has ten academic colleges and two schools offering over 150 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate programmes in different disciplines of arts and sciences, natural resources, architecture, agricultural sciences, business, human science, medicine, media and communication, law, social science, engineering and education. The students can pursue doctoral degrees in research areas like atmospheric sciences, epidemiology, grid computing, pulsed power, wind energy and nanophotonics. As per the Fall 2019 record, the total enrolment at TTU is 38,803 students from 46 states of the U.S. and countries of the world. It has 1,600 full-time and 188 part-time faculty members on the roll.
