About Commonly called SUNY Poly or SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute is an open research university. Established at a primary school in 1966, the university offers education at its two campuses in the metropolitan area of Utica-Rome and Albany, New York. Founded in 2004, the Albany campus was a part of the University at Albany. It saw sharp expansion in the 2000s and 2010s before integrating with the SUNY Institute of Technology in 2014. As 2 of 5 colleges within the polytechnic institute, it became the first college of the country to offer educational programs in nanotechnology.
Moreover, its campus in Marcy is spread over a land of more than 400 acres. It includes some important buildings with three residential complexes, surrounded by verdant greenery. SUNY Poly is accredited by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Its academic programs are registered by the State Education Department.
SUNY Poly provides degrees in computer science, nursing, business, engineering, arts and sciences, communication, and the behavioral sciences, as well as nanoscale engineering and nanoscale science, among many others. Besides classroom experience, SUNY Poly offers unique internship and hands-on opportunities that are available through a number of the institution’s corporate partners, some of which are located on-site at both of SUNY Poly’s campuses. SUNY Poly is organized into five colleges namely College of Arts & Sciences, College of Health Sciences, College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering, College of Business Management, and College of Engineering. It housed a total population of more than 2,000 undergraduate students, representing around 15 nationalities. Furthermore, the average class size is 18 with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1.
Also, the institute manages several clubs and organizations to cater to a diverse set of interests. Some of the known campus organizations are BLASU (Black Latino Asian Student Union), Wildcats Care, Wildcat Media, Poly Pride, and Music Club. Students can also become a part of student government organizations. Other than this, the institute offers residential facilities alongside programs held by residential student staff. The athletic team of the institute, namely Wildcats, is a part of NCAA Division III and the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). It allows students to involve in various sports including baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, cross country and volleyball. The institute proudly boasts of its rich alumni base with more than 27,000 ex-students.
Many of its alumni are now involved with leading organizations and working in areas including engineering, nursing, science, accountancy mathematics, and psychology. Some of the prominent alumni include Albert Lincoln Roker Jr. (lead weather and feature anchor at NBC), William “Billy” Baldwin (award-winning actor), and Susie Essman (author, writer, television producer, and stand-up comic sensation).
