Suffolk University is a private research institution of higher education situated in one of the largest cities of the U.S – Boston. The institute was started as a law school in 1906 and became a university in the 1930s. Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education categorizes it as a Doctoral Research University. The university’s core campus is set in Boston and is home to freshman and undergraduate population. Apart from this, it has an additional international campus in Madrid. It has more than 7,300 students at its Boston campus and is known to be the 8th largest university in the metropolitan city. It has more than 900 full-time and adjunct faculty members. The university also maintains schools to offer higher education.
Apart from Joint degrees, it offers undergraduate and graduates degrees. The university also maintains sports teams called the Suffolk Rams. These teams participate in NCAA Division III as members of the GNAC and the ECAC in various varsity sports. Sports that can be chosen at the university include baseball, cross country, basketball, golf, indoor and outdoor track and field, ice hockey, soccer, softball, volleyball, and tennis.
Other than this, the university also houses several research centers and institutes, including the Centers for the Moakley Archives, Restorative Justice, Women’s Health and Human Rights, Crime & Justice Policy Research, Political Research Centers, the Poetry Center, and the Sagan Energy Research Laboratory. Its Political Research Center conducts various scientific polls of regional and national political issues.
The university is set in one of the largest cities in the country and maintains a good reputation. The university has been visited by many notable scholars, famous speakers, and politicians to give speeches, such as Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, John F. Kennedy, and Ex-President of U.S George Herbert Walker Bush.
Other than this, the university has successfully graduated thousands of known and prominent people who are now working in different areas. Some of them are global leaders while some are leading their organizations. Some of the notable alumni include John Hynes (49th Mayor of Boston), James A. Burke (U.S. Representative), James Bamford (journalist and author), Jerald G. Fishman (President and CEO of Analog Devices) and John Loftus (author and television commentator).
