Stetson University was established in 1883. It is a private university with four colleges and schools situated over the I-4 passage in Central Florida with the primary undergraduate campus in DeLand. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The university has four locations across Central Florida: DeLand, Celebration, Tampa, and Gulfport. The College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business Administration, and the School of Music are on the historic campus in DeLand. The university also includes the Tampa Law Center, the College of Law in the Gulfport and St. Petersburg area, and the Stetson University Center at Celebration just south of Orlando.
There are more than 55 majors and minors leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, or Bachelor of Business Administration degrees. Graduate degrees are offered by the School of Business Administration in Accounting and Business Administration, and by the College of Arts and Sciences in Education and Counselling. The Juris Doctor and Master of Laws are offered by the Stetson College of Law, which ensures admission to Stetson graduates who meet certain academic prerequisites. Dual degree programs are offered in law and business administration, and in pharmacy and business administration.
A wide variety of academic programs are accessible to students, for example, the Roland George Investments Programme, where business students deal with a genuine portfolio of more than $2.8 million. The Honours Programme, where students and staff team up in an interdisciplinary community. The Nina B. Hollis Institute for Education Reform, endeavors to improve education from preschool through college. The Stetson Institute for Social Research offers services to outside organizations, and the Family Enterprise Centre offers a major in the family business. The Sullivan Creative Writing Program is an undergrad initiative. Stetson University additionally offers special programs for students up through ninth grade. Besides the completion of a ‘senior thesis’ project necessary for graduation, students have the chance to build up their own research projects and be associated with faculty research. Two particular programs cultivate undergrad research. The SURE (Stetson Undergraduate Research Experience) Grant competition, gives summer stipends and faculty tutors for selected student research projects.
At present, Stetson University has about 4,341 students enrolled for distinct programs, out of which 3,150 are undergraduates and 1,191 are graduate/professional students. Ther are around 265 full-time faculty members in this university and the student-faculty ratio is 13:1.
Stetson University offers study abroad programs at various universities in England, Scotland, Russia, Spain, Germany, and China and in Washington, D.C. Stetson Showcase, a day-long event that urges all students to impart their research with the Stetson community. Academically talented students are very much compensated at Stetson University. Almost 97 percent of the incoming class gets a merit scholarship. Awards can range up to full tuition, and Stetson offers talent, service, and donor-funded scholarships to qualified applicants. Stetson University has three separate libraries: one each on the DeLand campus, Gulfport Law campus, and the Tampa Law campus. Each library provides students and faculty with access to electronic and print resources, computers, meeting spaces, and study spaces in a fully networked environment.
Notable alumni are: Gus Bilirakis is the U.S. Representative, Florida’s 9th Congressional District, Jeff Bowen is an author and star of Broadway play title of the show, and Mark Brisker is an American-Israeli professional basketball player.
