St. Lawrence University

The Universalist Church leaders had formed St. Lawrence University in the year 1856. It had initially opened as a preparatory department for theological studies. Presently, it is a privately-owned liberal arts college. Their motto in Latin is Fides et Veritas which translates to Faith and Truth. The athletic teams are known as the Saints and their colours are Scarlet and Brown. St. Lawrence University has a very successful past in Ice Hockey and has produced some great Ice Hockey players.

The university is to the south of the Village of Canton. A major part of the campus is off-limits to vehicles and is known as the ‘walking campus’. The roads that keep it well-connected to downtown Canton are College Street, Maple Street, Park Street, Lincoln Street and Hillside Avenue. Students who had visited the Zen gardens in Japan went on to design the North Country Japanese Garden. The Sullivan Student Centre was established in 2004 and named after Ann and Dann Sullivan. The Owen D. Young Library is the main library of the campus and was made in 1959. This library contains the Munn Writing Centre. The Gunnison Memorial Chapel witnesses many spiritual and religious services. The oldest building on the campus is the Richardson Hall. The Piskor Hall houses the sociology, philosophy, history and anthropology departments. The Memorial Hall houses the environmental studies and Canadian studies programmes. The Herring-Cole Hall is used as a reading and study room. The Hepburn Hall houses the economics and government departments. The Carnegie Hall houses the International Studies programme.
