Southern Illinois University

Also called SIU, Southern Illinois University is an open research university situated in Carbondale, Illinois. Established in 1869, it is the oldest site of the university system of Illinois. Started as Southern Illinois Normal College, the university started its first session with eight members of faculty and 53 students. In the year 1947, its name was changed to Southern Illinois University. Between 1950 and 1991, the university saw a rapid student enrolment. In 1957, an additional campus of the university was formed at Edwardsville. The standard size of the classes at SIU is between 19-29 students with only 5% of classes include 50 or more students. Furthermore, the standard class has a student-to-faculty ratio of 15:1. Also, 83 percent of the faculty members at the university are full-time employees.

The university is open to students from all US states as well as over 100 countries across the world. The university offers 300 academic programs including 100 bachelor’s, 3 associate, 73 master’s and 36 Ph.D. programs. In addition to this, it offers specialized degree programs in law, architecture, and medicine. Apart from this, the university is also providing an MD/JD dual degree program since 1989.

Other than this, there is a library at the campus called Morris Library which holds over 4 million volumes, more than 3.6 million microform units, and 53,000 existing periodicals and serials. Also, it provides a broad variety of electronic sources to students working over research projects. The university maintains a student center which is also one of the largest student unions across the country.

Additionally, there are numerous facilities offered at the campus including places to relax, eateries and group study corners. Also, the Student Center comes with a bookstore, dining places, ATM and many other facilities required for students. The university has an athletic team, namely Southern Illinois Salukis, which participates at various levels.

Other than this, the university has 400 active and vibrant registered student organizations and clubs so that they can pursue their talent and interest in different areas. The institution boasts of its alumni base and has produced over 220,000 graduates worldwide. Some of the known alumni include Lionel Antoine (ex-NFL offensive tackle), Charles Basch (professor of health education, Teachers College, Columbia University) and James Belushi (actor/comedian).
