Founded in 1909, Southern Arkansas University (SAU) is a public-funded institution for higher education and research in Columbia County’s Magnolia city. It was originally set up as a district agricultural high school in southwest Arkansas. Following several names and structural changes since its inception, SAU received the authority of offering postgraduate degrees in selected areas of study in the year 1975. Hence, it transitioned from a college to a university under its present-day name. It has accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission.
The university has a beautiful coeducational and residential campus, spread over an area of 1,418 acres. The campus consists of well-maintained buildings that house state-of-the-art classroom spaces, laboratories, administrative offices, recreational spaces, and athletic facilities. The university provides housing facilities to the students in its eight residence halls and on-campus apartments. The campus features a store where students can shop apparel, housewares and decor items, gifts, tech gadgets, and other accessories. Four dining points on the campus provide a huge range of beverages and cuisines. A variety of health services are rendered by the university to meet the mental, physical and emotional needs of the students and teachers. Other on-campus facilities include a bookstore, multipurpose arena, community hall, counseling center, and an ATM.
SAU has five colleges and one school offering specialization in different disciplines of business, liberal and performing arts, education, science, and engineering. It extends over 70 undergraduate full-time programs. The university also provides 19 post-graduate programs either face-to-face, online classes or as a hybrid combination of both. Currently, it has about 4,771 students on roll, which includes 3,287 undergraduates and about 1,484 postgraduates. With about 43.9 % of the classes having less than 20 students, the student-teacher ratio at the university is 17:1.
The university holds sports affiliation from NCAA II. It maintains both men’s and women’s sports teams, known by the names Muleriders and Lady Muleriders respectively. Apart from this, the students’ association manages several events and competitions to allow students to explore their leadership qualities and personal interests. Several sororities and fraternities promote unity and relationships between diverse cultures and communities.
The university possesses a comprehensive list of alumni who are extremely successful in their professional fields. It takes pride in celebrating their accomplishments. The alumni list includes a few distinguished names like Jordan Babineaux (Footballer), Bruce Bennett (Politician), Tracy Lawrence (Country Musician, Song Writer and Record Producer), Fred Perry (Canadian Footballer), Harry Thomason (Director and Producer), Horace M. Wade (Former Air Force General), Frank Spooner (Politician and Businessman), Steve Forbes (Head Basketball Coach) and Dan Kyle (Politician).
