Sofia University was earlier known as the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. It was founded in 1975. Its core values include service, transformation, cultural humility, inspiration, commitment, stewardship, academic excellence, innovation and emotional awareness. The university was known for its emphasis on transpersonal psychology. Since its establishment, the university has expanded to include study programmes in subjects such as Business Administration and Computer Science. The institute changed its name in 2012. The university is dedicated to inspiring students to make a difference in their communities irrespective of their degrees.
It comprises three schools, namely Graduate School of Transpersonal Studies, Graduate School of Clinical & Spiritual Psychology and School of Undergraduate Studies. The university has two campuses in Palo Alto and Costa Mesa, California. The main campus in Palo Alto spans over an area of 46,000 square feet. Four buildings on the second campus are spread over 14 acres of land. Students can choose from online/low residency, campus and hybrid programmes. The housing facility is not available on the campus. For accommodation, students can opt for a studio, 1 Bed 1 Bath or 2 Bed 2 Bath options.
The university is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It is also accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and recognised by the U.S Department of Education. Besides offering Bachelor Completion programmes, it offers MS Computer Science, MBA, MBA Chineses Language, MA Transpersonal Psychology, MA Counselling Psychology, PsyD Clinical Psychology, PhD Transpersonal Psychology and a number of certificate programmes
