Shorter University is a private institution with Christian values in Rome, Georgia. This institution was set up in the year 1873. It provides education to students through seven colleges and schools. Initially, when the college was set up, only girls were permitted as it was established to promote women’s education. From 1953, boys were admitted into the college. In the early years, the college consisted of only three departments viz. primary, preparatory, and collegiate. Young women in the collegiate department studied the classics, science, music, art, and drama and established the literary magazine in the locality.
On June 01, 2010, the institution changed its identity from Shorter College to Shorter University. Along with educational qualifications, the college renders spiritual guidance to its students and helps them embark on a life filled with positivity and hope. Students have the opportunity to engage themselves in worship, Bible Studies, community ministries, summer missions & mission trips, family groups, and fellowships.
The university consists of two campuses, namely the Main Campus and the Thornwood Campus. The Thornwood Campus holds only a few departments under its veil. The department of home science and nursing is taken care of by this sector of the college. It has nursing classrooms, offices, Thornwood home, and Thornwood gym inside this premise. The main campus consists of the majority of the departments of the institution. It has the halls, executive desks, the student union body, chapel, theatre, lawn, and the libraries. The main campus section of the college also has a golf ground.
Shorter University USA provides education under the dominions of Science, Arts, Business Administration, Fine Arts, Music, Nursing, and pre-professional programs. The university also offers online degrees in bachelor and associate. In 2014, the NCAA officially introduced the Hawks into full NCAA Division II as a member of the Gulf South Conference, announcing the celebratory end to the university’s three-year transition from the NAIA.
The university gives keen attention to the safety of the students and has equipped the residential halls with security locks. All rooms have individual air conditioning units, local phone service, and internet access cables. Each room contains a twin size bed, desk and dresser, and bunker beds. The blocks that are allocated for the stay of male students are Hazel Eubanks Hall, Roberts Hall, Mallary Apartments, Gwaltney Apartments, Townes Apartments, and Bass Village (building A&B). For the accommodation of female students, the blocks that are allocated include Cooper and Van Hoose Halls, Newman Hall, New Residence Hall, and Bass Village (Building C).
Some of the renowned alumni of this college are Jamie Barton, Nathan Dean, and Phyllis Tickle. The university also gives its students various scholarships such as Academic Merit Scholarships, Shorter Excellence Scholarship, Baptist Appreciation Scholarship, The Goizueta Foundation Scholarship, The Missionary Dependent Scholarship, Shorter Scholars Program, Fine Arts Scholarships, and Athletic Scholarships.
