In 1950, the Alabama State Board of Education had established The Tuscaloosa Trade School. In 1952, it had opened to students for classes. The campus of the school was at the intersection of McFarland Boulevard and the 15th Street/Veterans Memorial Drive. It was to the southeast of downtown. In 1954, The Tuscaloosa Trade School was named J.P. Shelton Trade school after a state legislature. He had initially influenced the opening of the school so the change of name was done to honor him. In 1976, the name of the school had changed again. It came to be known as the Shelton State Technical College.
In 1975, Bevill State Community College (then, Brewer State Junior College) had opened a campus at a building of an old elementary school in Tuscaloosa. It was situated near the intersection of Greensboro Avenue and 28th Street. Initially, it had 800 students and 3 full-time faculties. The campus was shifted to a renovated strip mall located on Skyland Boulevard. Shelton State Technical College and Brewer State Junior College’s Tuscaloosa branch had come together to form the present-day Shelton State Community College on January 1st, 1979. The current president of SSCC is Dr. William “Bill” Ashley. Their sports teams are known as the Buccaneers and their colors are Gold and Emerald.
SSCC operates from 2 campuses. One is situated in the suburb of Taylorville, to the south of Tuscaloosa. Off Alabama Highway 69, it is known as the Martin Campus. The other is known as the Fredd Campus. It is situated on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, to the west of Tuscaloosa. The academic programs offered at SSCC include Behavioral Sciences, Humanities and Communication Arts, Business and Computer Science, Language, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Health, Wellness, Food and Nutrition, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
The department of Behavioral sciences offers Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. The department of Humanities and Communication Arts offers History, Mass Communications, Humanities, Philosophy, Public Relations, Religion, and Speech Communication. The department of Language has English and Spanish.
The department of Business and Computer Science offers Business, Computer Science, Economics, Paralegal, and Real Estate. The department of Fine Arts offers Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre. The department of Natural Sciences has Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics. The department of STEM has Chemical Engineering, Civil, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering.
The department of Health, Wellness, Food, and Nutrition offers Athletic Training, Home Economics/Nutrition, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Wellness, and Fitness Management. The Technical Division at Shelton State offers programs in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology, Automotive Services Technology, Business Office Management and Technology, Child Development, Computer Science Technology, Culinary Arts, Humanities, Diesel Mechanics, Electrical Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design Technology, Industrial Electronics Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Salon and Spa Management, Welding Technology, and Wellness. The Health Services Programs include Associate Degree Nursing, Health Information Technology, Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide, Practical Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy.
