The campus of the school was at the intersection of McFarland Boulevard and the 15th Street/Veterans Memorial Drive. It was to the southeast of downtown. In 1954, The Tuscaloosa Trade School was named J.P. Shelton Trade school after a state legislature. He had initially influenced the opening of the school so the change of name was done to honor him.
