The Seminole State College (SSC) of Florida was set up in 1965. It has four campuses, all of them in Central Florida. In the Florida College System, this college is the 8th largest member. Initially, the college was started as a junior college and later became a community college in 1975. From an enrollment of 700 students, by 1975, the student tally was more than 14,000. In 2011, the college had more than thirty thousand students studying full-time and part-time courses. The college holds the distinction of being amongst Seminole County’s largest employers, given that all of its campuses are in the county itself.
SSC has received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Additionally, accreditations that are specific to programs or endorsements have also been received by the college. The American Bar Association, American Medical Association, National Association for the Education of Young Children, US Fire Administration, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Approval Committee for Certificate Programs, Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, etc. have all endorsed/accredited the college.
The campuses of the college are namely the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, Oviedo campus, Altamonte Springs campus, and an education center namely the Center of Economic Development at Heathrow. The college offers Associate in Science degrees in Arts, Humanities, Communications, Design, Business, Education, Health Sciences, Industry, Manufacturing, Construction, Public Safety, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The college also offers four-year Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Applied Science courses in Business, Information Management, Construction, Engineering Technology, Health Sciences, Information Systems Technology, RN-to-BN, and Interior Design.
There are certificate courses for professional preparation for graduate degree holders in project management, social media and e-marketing analytics, health coaching and human performance, and healthcare education. The faculty of the college is well-versed in their subject areas. Professors and lecturers carry substantial work experience as well. They engage with students on research projects providing guidance and mentorship. Students at the college have varied avenues to explore to connect, exchange knowledge, broaden their horizons, and network. Over forty student clubs are operated by the college, which includes InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Environmental Club, African American Cultural Forum, the Hispanic Student Association, to name a few. A student body named Government Association serves as a helpline or mouthpiece for students.
The college has an extensive alumni network. The Alumni Association represents the alumni of the college. Some notable alumni of the college are actors Hardy Rawls and Norm Lews, baseball players Rob Ducey, Bobby Thigpen, Mike Clevinger, and Dee Gordon, cartoonist Doug Marlette, screenwriter Paula Pell, tennis player Mikael Pernfors, etc.
