Established in 1963, Saginaw Valley State University is an open university in Michigan, the U.S. The university was earlier known as Saginaw Valley State College, Saginaw Valley College, and Delta Senior University. It is the newest university amongst the 15 open universities in Michigan. Later on, the university began offering a four-year liberal arts course. In 2013, the institution launched a campaign named “Talent. Opportunity. Promise” with an aim of raising a fund of about 25 million dollars. The university has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. In 1980, the university was granted accreditation for the master’s degree program. The College of Arts and Behavioural Sciences is known to be the oldest amongst the five colleges at the university.
The campus of the university houses 5 halls and 3 centers along with seven residence halls for students, namely First-year suites A to E, First-year suites F & G, Living Centre North, Living Centre South, University Village, Pine Grove, and Living Centre Southwest. The university also features the Health and Human Services Building which comprises the biggest aqua-thermal cooling/heating system in Michigan.
The campus provides all the facilities required by students. The university has research laboratories within the premises. The library of the university consists of 2,00,000 printed copies and about 4,00,000 online resources. All the e-books and books are made available to students. Many cafes and restaurants are nearby the campuses. Stationery shops, chemist shops, and convenience stores are also located close to the campus. Public transport is easily available from the campus. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. There are 7,431 students in undergraduate programs and about 758 students are under postgraduate programs. The academic structure of the university comprises 5 colleges, namely the College of Arts & Behavioural Sciences, College of Business & Management, College of Education, the College of Health & Human Services, and the College of Sciences, Engineering, & Technology.
The faculty members are well-experienced and provide students with ample practical knowledge. Students also get a chance to work under professionals at the research labs within the university. The broad range of subjects gives students opportunities to choose from the courses as per their area of interest. The university also participates in student exchange programs. It is associated with Shikoku University in Japan. Due to this program, students learn about a different curriculum and can get hold of several internship opportunities.
The university has a list of some notable alumni that includes Dej Loaf (Rapper, singer), Bart Stupak (American politician), Robert Callaway (Renowned footballer), BS Yeddyurappa (Former Chief Minister of Karnataka), Meera Chopra (South Indian Actress), and Matthew Black (Former Canadian professional footballer).
