Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) was founded on March 22, 1877, and is ranked as the Best College for Art in America by the U.S.Department of Education. It is a private, non-profit college started by a group of women who gathered funds to support the state’s booming textile and design industry. Rhode Island School of Business is also one of the first fine arts schools in the USA. The college offers courses for undergraduates and graduates.
The courses offered for undergraduates are Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture. The courses offered for graduates are Master of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Industrial Design, Master of Landscape Architecture, and Master of Design in Interior Studies, Master of Arts in Interior Architecture, Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in Art plus Design Education. Graduate and undergraduate students can opt for a variety of specialization among courses like Apparel Design, Film/Animation/ Video, Glass, Illustration, Interior Architecture, Painting, Printmaking, Textiles, Architecture, Ceramics, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Jewellery/Metalsmithing, Photography and Sculpture. The college is located in Rhode Island with a campus size of 19 acres.
The campus provides a lot of facilities to students for academics as well as extra-curricular activities, especially sports. The students have formed seventy-three clubs, of which more than half are dedicated to sports which are symbolic of a Fine Arts School. The college has an amalgamation of domestic and international students, where 33 percent of students are domestic and 37 percent of students are international.
The total enrolment of students is more than 2500, where 32 percent is male students and 68 percent is female students. RISD also provides on-campus housing for sixty percent of the students and the rest are assisted with accommodation facilities near the college. The college believes in close collaborations between the teachers and students and hence maintains an average class size of fourteen students and a student-teacher ratio of 9:1.
Rhode Island of Design has a 90 percent employment rate and the average salary for postgraduates is $56,400. Sixteen percent of students also get gifts, aids, and grants to support their studies. The alumni of the college have made a mark in all the fields but the most remarkable are Architecture, Art Collectors, Art Dealers, Digital arts, MacArthur Fellowships, Multimedia installations, Painting, Photography, fashion and Film, and Television.
