Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was founded by Stephen Van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton in 1824. It was initially named as The Rensselaer School and was renamed as Rensselaer Institute in 1833. The university was given its present name in 1861. Currently, the institution has five academic schools. It holds the accreditation of several prestigious organizations like the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), ABET, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and American Chemical Society (ACS).

Located in Troy, the main Rensselaer campus is spread across 275 acres. The campus has an excellent infrastructure and offers 746 labs, technology spaces, and studios used for research. It provides students with excellent residence and dining facilities. The campus is dotted with restaurants and cafes. It also offers many sports and recreational facilities to the students like boxing, running, judo, golf, table tennis, skiing and snowboarding, taekwondo, karate, volleyball, ice hockey, indoor soccer, and basketball and floor hockey. The campus is home to more than 30 sports clubs. It also has a huge library and a well-stocked bookstore. It offers separate spaces for clubs, meetings, fitness activities, entertainment and performing arts. Also, the institute has a distance learning center in Groton, Connecticut, and a 15-acre campus in Hartford, Connecticut.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute offers a plethora of undergraduate, doctoral, and postgraduate courses in various fields of education like a business, management, sciences, mathematics, computer science, information technology, architecture, astronomy, engineering, languages, communication, arts, philosophy, and psychology. The university houses over 7,900 students and an excellent team of nearly 500 qualified and experienced faculty members. The faculty team includes 176 fellows from professional societies, National Academy members, and 63 NSF CAREER Award winners. The college is home to about 1,800 international scholars and students. It provides services like student counseling and skill development training. The Center for Career & Professional Development of the college helps students in perfecting their resume, research for potential graduate schools and employers, honing their interview skills, and securing impressive jobs or internships.

Raymond Tomlinson was a computer programmer who is credited with the invention of e-mail. Curtis Priem is a computer scientist who designed the first graphics processor. Steven J. Sasson is an electrical engineer who invented the first self-contained digital camera. Brian Pothier was a popular professional ice hockey defenceman. Gary Burrell is the chairman emeritus and co-founder of Garmin. Gregory R.Wiseman is a NASA astronaut, naval aviator, and engineer. Many other distinguished and famous names are a part of the institute’s alumni network.
