In 1851, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur founded the Academy of Notre Dame in San Jose. In 1868, it was chartered as the College of Notre Dame. The Sisters had bought Ralston Hall in 1922, and in 1923, the college was opened in Belmont. In 1969, the college became co-ed from a women-only institution. Notre Dame de Namur was one of the first colleges to offer baccalaureate degrees to women (in 1868) and a PhD in Art Therapy(in 2013). The university is situated on the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula, near the Pacific Ocean. It is in Belmont, California. The university has a traditional dorm living. The School of Business and Management is situated in the Cuvilly Hall.

St. Mary’s Hall has science labs, classrooms, computer labs, the business office, registrar office, and the financial aid office. The theatre of the university is situated on Ralston Avenue, just below the main campus. The Art Therapy program is situated in Gavin Hall. It is the smallest instructional building. Satellite programs are offered at Canada College at Redwood City and Mision College in Santa Clara. The College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate degrees and programs in Biological Sciences, Biological Sciences Teacher Preparation Program, Computer Science, English, Health Sciences, History, Kinesiology, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. A graduate program Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program is offered. Minors are offered in Biochemistry, Chemistry, English, History, Philosophy, Pre-Law, Religious Studies, Spanish Studies, Biology, Criminal and Community Justice, Environmental Justice, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

The School of Business and Management provides Day Undergrad Degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, and Communication. Minors are also offered in Accounting, Communication, and Business Administration. Evening Undergrad Degrees are provided in Business Administration and Human Services. Graduate Degrees are provided in Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Administration. Online Programs are provided in Criminal Justice, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Public Administration. The School of Education and Psychology offers Undergrad Degrees in Liberal Studies, Biological Sciences Teacher Preparation Program, and Blended Liberal Studies Credential Program. It provides Continuing Education Degrees in Clinical Psychology Department and Art Therapy Department. The Graduate Programs that are offered include Master of Arts in Education, School Administration, Special Education, Art Therapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Master of Science in Clinical Psychology.

Teaching Credential Programs include Credentials Office, Integrated Liberal Studies, Multiple Subject Credential, Single Subject Credential, Education Specialist Credential, and Administrative Service Credential.
