Northern Illinois University is a public research university. The university was established in 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School by Illinois Governor John P Altgeld as a part of the expansion of the state’s system for producing college educated teachers. The university comprises 7 degree-granting colleges. The university and its colleges have institutional membership or other affiliations in or with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, American Council on Education, Association of State Colleges and Universities, Council of Graduate Schools, and Universities Research Association.
The university’s main campus is located in Dekalb, 765-acre campus is an eclectic mix of architecture and beautiful natural spaces. It offers students complete traditional university experience. The university also has satellite centers in Chicago, Rockford, Hoffman Estates and Naperville.
The university’s programs are nationally accredited for meeting high standards of academic quality, comprising teacher certification, business, visual and performing arts engineering, nursing programs. The options at NIU are more than plentiful, with 100-plus courses of study. It also maintains the College of Law. The university is a member of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. The university’s School of Theatre and Dance has an association with the Moscow Art Theatre School. The graduate students attend a month’s training in Moscow, whereas the undergraduate students participate in a semester-long program. The university’s Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management hosts several programs to enrich students living and learning on the campus. The University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts organizes and hosts many dance productions, art exhibitions, theatrical productions, and music concerts.
The university is amongst the only 3 public universities in Illinois that participate and compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the highest levels of all sports, Division I in the Mid-American Conference. The university caters to the Counseling and Consultation Centre that provides support to students in cultural, academic, social, and emotional development through education, counseling, training, assessment, consultation, crisis response, and outreach services.
The university’s Campus Life Building caters to the student environment and leadership development, campus activities board, the student association, career services, the northern star student newspaper, the counseling, and student development center and the Honors program. The university has more than 300 student organizations, comprising recreational sports clubs dedicated to ice hockey, lacrosse, swimming, volleyball, and rugby.
