Mt. San Antonio College is a public community college which was established in the year 1946. The local leader of California had anticipated the return of young people from World War II for their college. With that in mind, four high school districts put together a vote to approve the formation of Mt. San Antonio Community College. The school was built on 445 acres of land which was the location of a US Naval Hospital, and its lease was acquired by the district leader by the State of California.
Starting with a small budget of merely 190,000 USD, the staff accumulated whatever little they could find, and on the 16th of September, 1946, the college opened its gates for the first time. The college started with a mere 682 students and had its classes divided into seven divisions and 12 departments. Currently, the school offers over 240 degrees and certificate programs and over 200 programs dedicated to the development of the community. Since its inception, Mt. SAC has invested over 500 million dollars in the upgrading and refurnishing of its facilities for better and more efficient equipment and learning environment.
Having over 50,000 students, the college offers a program in aviation and aircraft maintenance that offers degrees of Aviation Science and Commercial Flight to the Associates of Science. The attending students can pursue either degrees or certificate-based courses or can also indulge in noncredit based programs and workforce development courses and community programs as per their discretion. Being a community college, the student body comprises students fresh out of high school to people who have families and also have full-time jobs. Each individual at St. San Antonio College has a different background and comes from all wakes and stages of life. With community-based programs and professional associations, some of the popular career choices include nursing, EMT and firefighting, business management and veterinary technology, which are pursued by the graduating students of Mt. SAC.
